The young and healthy people can never understand the struggle the elderly face while moving around and settling in a place. The luxury that chose for them might not give them comfort that we want to give them.
Making a few additions to your home might not shut the struggle completely they face but can at least help reducing it a little bit.
Here are a few tips on reducing the load
Living room
Make the doors and lighting smartphone operable.
Do not place low height seating.
Make sure the lighting that you use in the living is indirect and does not produce any glare.
Go for anti-slip tiles and avoid area rugs.
Kitchen
Try including a surface where you can sit and cook because standing for long periods can cause lot of strain.
Do not install cabinets above the stove.
Opt for drawers instead of cabinets that do not require a lot off bending.
In case of a kitchen island, go for island on wheels as they can be moved easily to give space for walker or wheel chair.
Make sure the sink that you choose isn’t too deep.
Bedroom
Getting up from bed can be difficult if it is too high or too low. Make sure the height is between 24 to 36 inches.
The flooring should be soft and anti -slip and end to end carpet can be good option for bedroom.
Give multiple switches for lights and fans.
Give uniform lighting throughout the bedroom
Toilets
While installing grab bars is the least we can do for them, installing adjustable toilet seat is also preferred.
Do not install walk in showers with enclosures.
Incorporate a chair in the shower area.
Choose faucets that can be easily handled with hot and cold water markings on it that can be seen clearly.
