Kid’s rooms are often tricky to design. Making the room functional as well as trendy is a big challenge. One has to make use of the space completely and keep in mind the children’s tastes as well. There are more considerations like furniture scale, functional storage that are to be made as well.
Following are a few do’s and don'ts that are to be kept in mind while designing a kid’s room.
1. Hobbies and interest
The first and foremost thing to keep in mind while designing the kids room is keeping in mind their interests and hobbies because it is their personal space and the room is going to be their little world. So choose the room theme based on their interest whether it is a cartoon character or the marvel universe or anything else leave it to them.
2. Functional space
Making the room functional is another important thing to remember as the kid not just sleeps but also does other things like painting, doing homework, hanging out with friends etc. So make sure the space is functional enough to handle all these activities.
3. Free standing units
Always use free standing units in your kids that are more stable and are less prone to hurt them or fall off. As the kids keep moving around there are quite more chances of them running into these. So make sure the units and at a safe height and don't hurt the child.
4. Built in shelves
Built in shelves is a safer option of storage than the free standing units. Since the shelves are built in there are fewer chances of kids running into them and hurting themselves. Also built shelves provide more storage.
5. Add more cubbies
There are a lot of things for the kids to store, their school works, notes, toys, instruments, clothes, art works and what not. So make sure you provide enough for all these. Make space for more cubbies for future storage because as the kid grows his/her works increase too.
6. Safety
Kids always tend to put their hands into open sockets. It is important to make sure these are out of reach. The wiring should be out of sight as well.
7. Furniture
As the kids keep running around, make sure to use rounded and foamed edges. Also as the kids grow, the space should be able to accommodate the grown up kid as well. Hence the furniture used should be functional, adjustable and adaptable.
8. Storage
Keep the storage within the reach of the kids. Picking up their own things gives them a sense of independence. Providing open storages can be age friendly. The units can be added further as the child grows.
9. Divide into zones
There are various activities like painting, sleeping, hanging out, and playing that the kid performs in their rooms. So divide the room into different zones giving each activity due importance.
10. Make room for technology
No matter even if your kid doesn't use much technology, it is still necessary to wisely plan the wires, switch boards and sockets that the kid will use eventually in the future.
11. Choose practical flooring
While choosing flooring in your kid’s room choose wisely. Make sure you don't use rugs as the kids can trip over them. Also the flooring should be slip resistant and safe for the kids.
12. Display creations
Kids create new things every day. Be it a painting of their parents or their score card where they got an “A”, kids like showing off. They like to show their small achievements in a big way. So make sure you add soft boards to their room to glorify their accomplishments.
Don’ts
1. Use expensive wallpapers
All kids live to draw and especially on the walls. Using expensive wallpapers in your kids room will only give them a drawing canvas. So use washable paint instead of wallpaper on the walls.
2. Age sensitive themes
Kids grow up fast and their taste and interests keep changing. So choose the themes that are not confined to a certain age. Because the cartoon theme that your child likes might find it childish tomorrow.
3. Overdue themes
Once you choose a neutral theme don't overdo it. Keep the theme confined to subtle things like the lampposts, pillow covers, bed covers and stationary. You don't want the room to turn into a fantasy world.
4. Isolating the kids
Kids need their own privacy but isolating them is not right. Keep the room not far away from your sight.
5. Nonadjustable furniture
Kids always outgrow the furniture. Furniture that is not adjustable is waste of money and space. So invest on furniture that can be adjusted as the child grows be it bed or storage units choose wisely keeping in mind the future.
6. More use of warm colors
Kids love bright, peppy colors, but using them throughout the room can make it seem dull. More use of bright colors can also harm the kids' thinking since they have more effect on the child’s brain than subtle colors.
7. Switch boards and sockets in kids reach
Always keep the switch boards and sockets out of reach of your kids. Plan the switch boards that are unreachable and also helpful to them when they grow up.
8. Go with trends
Never go with the latest trends for your kids room because trends keep changing and so does your kids taste with age. So choose designs that remain trendy always and are versatile.
9. Select bulky furniture
Choosing bulky furniture can take up a lot of space in the room leaving a little for the child to play. Hence choosing furniture that is light and easy to move is preferred in a kid’s room.
10. Minimum storage
Kids have stuff, a lot of stuff to do and store. Minimal storage in a kid’s room is a big no. Give them all the space they need to store all this stuff and make sure they never run out of space for their stuff.
11. Harsh lighting
Improper lighting can damage your child’s eyesight. So choose the lighting wisely. Go for soft lights instead of harsh ones. Make sure there is plenty of natural light coming inside the room and the children are soaking in some sunlight.

12. Overlook the ceiling
Don't leave the ceiling in white. Make it a part of the theme you are following in the room. Make it look like the night sky or space and make it look interesting.
