Most of us either stay with our grandparents or have them visiting us once in a while. We try to make sure everything is in order for their safety and try to make them comfortable. But is your toilet safe enough? Are you sure they don’t have any problem using the toilet?
Below are a few tips on making the toilet safe for them without a lot of effort.
1. Grab bars
Most elders use towel bars to sit or stand but they aren’t strong enough to bear their weight. Install grab bars in the shower area and near by the toilet seat to help them. They can either be installed permanently or suction placed.
2. Adding shower chair or bench
Shower chair is a portable option and can be placed anywhere in the toilet. They can sit comfortably and enjoy a nice shower without any pain or standing for so long.
3. Non slip tiles and mats
There are high chances of falling while moving in and out of the shower area. Using non slip tiles and mats can help prevent that. Use textured flooring tiles they are excellent slip resistant tiles.
4. Avoiding throw rugs
Avoid using fancy throw rugs in the toilets to prevent falls in the toilet. The elderly are prone to fall running into them.
5. Adjustable toilet seat
The default toilet seat that is used in the toilets is usually low and it can be difficult for the elderly to sit on it. Try installing an adjustable toilet seat for them.
6. Placing essential items on reach
Make sure you place the essential items like the toiletry items, hair dryers are in a reachable height and can be accessed from anywhere of the toilet.
7. Using proper lighting
Do not use harsh low lighting in the toilets. Make sure they are well lit and bright. Low lighting can be harmful and can be a reason for their fall especially in the nights.
8. Avoid the use of overhead lighting fixtures
Use of overhead lighting can create a shadow on the floor which can be disturbing for the seniors. Hence avoid using it.
9. Non glare tiles and paint
Use of overhead lighting and glossy tiles and paint can create glare and harm their eye sight. So try choosing tiles that do not produce glare and paints with matt finish instead of gloss.
10. Install emergency phone
Installing an emergency phone can be an additional precaution. Make sure it is placed at an accessible height and water proof.
11. Placing an outward swing door
Placing an outward swing door can be useful in case of emergency situations if the person inside suffers a fall.
12. Marking hot and cold water handles clearly
Diminishing eye sight is another problem that the elderly suffer from. To help them we can mark the hot and cold water faucets clearly such that they can be seen even without spectacles.
